Hilar N. Smith, 105, of Worthington, died Friday, August 5, 1988 at 10:04 a.m. at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Friends and relatives of Mr. Smith called from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, August 6, and from 9 to 9, Sunday, August 10, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade where a St. Paul’s Altar and Rosary Society rosary was said at 4 p.m. and a wake service was held at 8 p.m.

Services for Mr. Smith were held Monday, August 8, 1988, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Worthington, with the Rev. James Blocklinger officiating, Rev. Edgar Kurt, Rev. James Cheppell, Rev. Ernest Engler, and Rev. Donald Peters concelebrated. Altar boys were Dan Gravel and Jason White. Lectors were Marilyn Rubner, Amy Smith and Diane Smith. Soloist was Beth Rubner. The eulogy was read by Howard Smith. Gift bearers were Carlyn Hunt, Eileen Watson, Calista Smith, Chelsey Smith, Greg Watson, Becky Koob, Paula Rubner, Robie Rubner, Jennifer Rubner, and J. J. Campbell. Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Worthington.

Mr. Smith was born April 5, 1883, in Worthington, to Hillarius and Catherine (Sauser) Smith. He attended Worthington area schools. On April 28, 1908, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Worthington, he was united in marriage to Mary Emerence Engler. Hilar and Mary moved to Epswitch, S. Dakota and built their own home. Mr. Smith worked with a carpenter crew that put up homes for homesteaders. In 1912, they returned to Iowa and started farming in the Worthington area, where they remained until their retirement.

Mr. Smith was a township assessor for 35 years. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Court No. 607 Worthington; and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society.

He is survived by five sons; Louis, Worthington; Cletus, Monticello; Emmett, Onslow; Alfred, Cascade; and Howard, Chicago. Four daughters, Mrs. Wendell (Eileen) Watson, Cedar Falls; Mrs. Joe (Germaine) McElmeel, Monticello; Mrs. Louis (Jeanette) Fangmann, Cascade; and Mrs. Virgil (Carlyn) Hunt, Edgewood; 58 grandchildren, 123 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Emerence, in March of 1969; one son, George Smith, on Feb. 14, 1983; two daughters, Ruth and Margie, both infancy; eight brothers and six sisters.

A honorary escort, afforded by the Catholic order of Foresters Court No. 607, Worthington, included Jim Engler, Carl Feldmann, Gilbert Fortman, and Merlin Fortman.

A honorary escort afforded by St. Paul’s Altar and Rosary Society, included Ben and Joan Loecke, Nick and Veronica Polfer, and Joe and Marie Marbach.

Honorary pallbearers were Hiliary Fangmann, Pete Loecke, Tim Loecke, Rusty Smith, Steve McElmeel, Ed Smith, Paul Smith, Terry Hahn, Bob Smith, Kevin Hahn, Daryl Rubner, Randy Rubner, Jim Rubner, and Greg Rubner.

Casket bearers were Lee Fangmann, Lloyd Smith, Randy Watson, Kevin Smith, Dave Smith, Jim Smith, Joe Smith and John Hunt.

A Hilar N. Smith memorial fund has been established.
