Walter C. Jones, 39, an agent for Prudential Life Insurance Company for the past nine years died at Finley Hospital at 3:55 o’clock Sunday afternoon from gun shot wounds.

Jones was cleaning and oiling a loaded pump gun in the kitchen of his home, 1360 Finley Street, late in the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 11. As he reached across a table for an oil can, his sleeve caught in the trigger of the gun and caused it to discharge. Shot tore his left hand to shreds and inflicted a serious wound to his left ankle. He suffered from shock and loss of blood. Several blood transfusions were preformed in effort to save his life.

Jones was born in Dubuque Nov. 3, 1895, and lived here all his life. He was a member of the Grandview Methodist Episcopal Church, of Metropolitan Lodge, No. 49, A. F. and A. M., and of Dubuque Post No. 6, American Legion. He enlisted as a volunteer in the first year of the World War, as assigned in the Third Division of the American Expeditionary Forces, served 18 months overseas and participated in five major battles.

Survivors are his widow, Ida L. and three children, La Mar, Marilyn and Freeman; his mother Mrs. Julius J. Jones; one brother, J. E. Jones; four sisters, Mrs. Alvin Wirzbach and Florence Jones Cousin, of Dubuque, Mrs. William M. Hutchison, Chicago, and Mrs. A. V. Owen of Brockton, Mass. One son, Truman Walter preceded him in death.

The body is at the home of his sister, Mrs. Alvin Wirzbach, 2295 Pearl Street, from where the funeral will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal Church at 2:30 o’clock. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery.
