While sitting in a chair at his home, 259 Locust Street, Policeman John Fox, aged 56 years, fell face forward to the floor and died about 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

Patrolman Fox had been a member of the Dubuque police for the past 15 years and was stationed on what is known as the Eighth and Main Street beat. He went on duty at 4 o'clock in the morning and was relieved at noon. He covered his “beat” as usual Saturday morning and did not complain of feeling ill. After his relief from duty he went home and ate a hearty noonday meal and went to bed for his usual afternoon nap. Getting up shortly before 3 o'clock he came downstairs and sat down in an easy chair. The following minute he died. Members of the family heard him fall and rushed to him but life was extinct.

John Fox was born in Galena, Ill., May 23, 1864 and lived there the early past of his life. From Galena he moved to Dubuque where he has since lived. On November 24, 1903, he was married to Mary Riley, who with one daughter Melitta survives. Four sisters and one brother also survive. They are Miss Kate Fox, Mrs. Agnes Quirk, Mrs. John Helbing and James Fox of Dubuque and Mrs. James Kiles, of Ann Harbor, Mich.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Raphael's Church.

During his service as a police officer for Dubuque, John Fox had always been held in high esteem among city officials. Seldom were there any controversies on his “beat” and although he enforced the city's laws to the letter he was saved undue criticism his sudden death came as a shock to the local force.
