FARLEY, Iowa - Carl J. "Chick" Palmer, 88, of 204 Fourth Ave. N.E., Farley, died at 6:58 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Chateau Royale, rural Worthington.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a St. Joseph's Parish wake service at 4 p.m.; a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m.; and a Farley American Legion Service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Palmer worked at Sears Roebuck Inc., Dubuque, until his retirement in 1979.

He was born on April 4, 1914, in Dubuque, son of Charles "Chick" and Kathryn (Brennan) Palmer. He married Mary White on June 14, 1947, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley.

He received his education at St. Columbkille's School, Dubuque, and graduated from the former Loras Academy. He furthered his education at the former Columbia College, Dubuque.

He was a veteran, serving in the Navy. From July 30, 1941, he was assigned to the USS Tularosa, where he endured many battles in World War II, until he was honorably discharged on Oct. 23, 1945.

He enjoyed sports throughout his life. He participated in CYO boxing in Dubuque. He was an excellent golfer and bowler, and played baseball for the Navy team, as well as many Dubuque area teams. He coached Little League for many years after its inception in Farley in 1958. In addition to sports, he enjoyed traveling and dancing to Big Band music.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Farley, its Altar and Rosary Society, and served as an usher. He also was a member of the Farley American Legion-Post 656 and the Farley Knights of Columbus Council 2001.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Palmer, of Farley; two sons, John (Peg) Palmer, of Dyersville, and Joe Palmer, of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Gina (Rick) Smith, of Dubuque, and Jeff and Chris Palmer, of Dyersville; two brothers, Merlin (Sally) Palmer and Don (Adel) Palmer, both of Dubuque; and three sisters, Mary Gau, Isabelle Hutter and Kathleen (Andy) Noel, all of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Helen Palmer and Harriet Egan; and three brothers-in-law, Bob Egan, Doran Gau and Richard "Dick" Hutter.
