FARLEY, Iowa -- Jane Kurt, 87, of 302 Browns Court, Farley, died at 7:02 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Farley. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, at the Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

She was born Nov. 12, 1920, in Worthington, daughter of Lawrence and Theresa (Schnier) Schemmel. She is a graduate of the former St. Paul's High School in Worthington. She also attended the University of Dubuque, where she received her teaching certification. She married Joseph Kurt on Nov. 25, 1947, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington.

Jane enjoyed ballroom dancing, cooking, bowling and traveling with her husband of 60 years. They lived on their family farm for more than 52 years until they retired to Farley. As a girl, she enjoyed playing kitten ball and growing up on her parents' farm.

Later she became a school teacher and taught at a country school near Worthington. But most of all, she enjoyed raising her family on their farm and spending time with them and her grandchildren.

Jane was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, a member of it's Altar and Rosary Society and a member of the Dubuque Co. Cattlewomen's Association.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Kurt, of Farley; two children, Julie (Mike) Schilling, of Burlington, and Jeff (Lisa) Kurt, of Farley; five grandchildren, Melissa, Ben, and Andrew Schilling, Jeremy and Justin Kurt; two sisters, Lois Schnier of Farley, and Margie (Clarence "Jr") Walters, of Cedar Rapids; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam Kurt and Herb Kurt, both of Cascade, Carl (Shirley) Kurt, of Dyersville, Melvin (LaVonne) Kurt, Leon (Trudy) Kurt, Margaret Otting, all of Cascade, and Eleanor Burke, of Bernard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Theresa "Tess" Kurt, Dottie Kurt, Mary Lou Kurt, Bill Boffeli, Ralph Otting, Pat Burke, Fred and Alvina Kurt, Andrew Kurt, Wilfred and Mary Dolphin and Anna Mae Lehman.
