Mrs. Deckert worked for 30 years, in the labor and delivery department at the former Xavier Hospital. She worked at Holy Family Hall until her retirement in 1986.

She was born on Jan. 16, 1924, in Epworth, Iowa, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Urbain) Kennedy. She married John Deckert on Nov. 24, 1951, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley.

She attended Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, where she earned her Registered Nurse diploma.

She was a member of the Holy Family Mothers Club for many years and she also was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

She was proud of being a nurse and she cherished the many friendships she developed with her co-workers.

She enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was tending to her flowers, taking family trips out West or to Agate Lake in northern Minnesota. Above all, Helen's greatest joy was spending time with family.

Her friendly smile and quick Irish wit will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She always will remain in our hearts as a loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, sister-in-law and friend.

Surviving are her husband; three sons, John T. (Ilene) Deckert, of De Witt, James (Julie) Deckert, of Dubuque, and Thomas (Judi) Deckert, of Davenport; her daughter, Susan (Steve) Thiltgen, of De Witt; Her grandchildren, Mark, J.P., Lyndsay, Jim, Jodi, Nick Daniel and Joe Deckert; two sisters, Elizabeth Kraus and Irene (John) Theobald, both of Dubuque; her brother, Frank Kennedy, of Epworth; and her sister-in-law, Irene Kennedy, of Farley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Clarence, Quay and Martin Kennedy; her sister, Mary Kennedy; her sisters-in-law, Anastacia, Helen, and Leona Kennedy; and her brother-in-law, Ralph Kraus.

A Helen Deckert Memorial Fund has been established.
