EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. - Donald E. "Don" Gantenbein, 71, 251 Copper Kettle Lane, East Dubuque, died at 7:25 a.m. Friday, March 20, 1998, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery, Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6, of Dubuque.

Mr. Gantenbein was a self-employed mechanic with numerous companies over the years, and he worked at Mulgrew Black Top Co. for many years. He more recently worked for Molo Ready Mix Co., prior to retiring.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1926, in Earlville, Iowa, son of Matthew and Bertha Mae (Haar) Gantenbein. He married Lois J. Galliart on Dec. 10, 1949, at Summit Congregational United Church of Christ, Dubuque; she died on Jan. 8, 1985.

He was a founding member of the Midtown Mariners Yacht and Boat Club.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 6, of Dubuque.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda K. Davis, of Dubuque; a son, Dan E. (Jan) Gantenbein, of East Dubuque; four grandchildren, Tami (Bob) Jansen, Matthew (Heather) Gantenbein, and Megan and Beth Davis; five great-grandchildren; his very special companion, Elaine M. Galliart; three sisters, Mae (Gus) Charley, of Dubuque, Jeannette (George) Charley, of Willcox, Ariz., and Marjorie (Merle) Wilson, of Tucson, Ariz.; and two brothers, Ronald Dzaboff, of Delaware, Iowa, and Robert (Annette) Gantenbein, of El Paso, Texas.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Matthew E. "Matty" Gantenbein, on June 17, 1975; his parents; four brothers, Matthew, Eugene, Jimmy and Leonard Gantenbein; and his stepmother, Hazel Mae Gantenbein.

The family requests no flowers. Memorial may be given to the Donald E. "Don" Gantenbein Memorial Fund and Hospice of Dubuque.

The family wishes to especially thank, Dr. David C. Oppert and the other attending physicians, Hospice of Dubuque, the Wendt Regional Cancer Center staff and The Finley Hospital oncology department for their tender loving care to Don during his extended illness.
