FARLEY, Iowa -- Lucille A. Hird, 87, of 107 6th Ave. NW, Farley, died at 10:48 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. The Farley American Legion Post 656 will meet at 7 p.m.

She was born on April 9, 1921, in Littleport, daughter of Alphonsus and Alice (Berns) Whittle. She is a graduate of the Strawberry Point High School.

She married Clarence "Jack" Hird on Nov. 30, 1939, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque.

Lucille loved to spend time in her kitchen baking and was well known as the "Cookie Lady".

She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, and the Farley Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her husband, Clarence "Jack" Hird, of Farley; 11 children, Ronald Hird, of Marion, Carolyn Shaheen, of Cedar Rapids, Robert (Cheryl) Hird and Norman Hird, both of Dubuque, Elaine (Bob) Hagge, of Potosi, Wis., Patricia (Dick) Conrad, of Earlville, Jeanne (Michael) Hopper, of Terre Haute, Ind., Kathleen (Ed) Hines, of Benton, Wis., Nancy (Dan) Waight, of Galesburg, Ill., John (Annette) Hird, of Volga, and James (Yvette) Hird, of San Antonio, Texas; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice (Fred) Soop, of Cary, Ill.; a brother, Ray (Linda) Whittle, of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Georgia Whittle, of Elkader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Sharian Hird, on May 14, 2008; twin granddaughters, Sheila and Annette Hird; a sister, Ardale Sutter; and three brothers, Joe, Virgil and Don Whittle.
