Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) - Saturday, September 21, 2013

FARLEY, Iowa - Duane C. "Buck" Hingtgen, 78, of 205 Fifth St., Farley, Iowa, died at 11:02 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services for Buck will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Farley, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. Friends and relatives may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where a wake service will be held at 4 p.m. and where the Farley Volunteer Fire Department will meet in a body at 7 p.m.

He was born on Nov. 27, 1934, in Dubuque, biological son of Francis and Marie (Ernst) Hingtgen, but was raised by his foster parents, Henry and Mabel Daly, of Farley. He is a graduate of the former St. Joseph's High School in Farley. He served in the Army for two years.

On Sept. 19, 1957, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Epworth, he was united in marriage to Janet A'Hearn.

Buck owned and operated Hingtgen Plumbing and Heating in Farley until his retirement.

He was a retired member of the Farley Fire Department.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Cubs and Hawkeyes. After suffering his first stroke in 1995, he was told he would not walk again. But due to his stubborn determination, he did walk and continued to attend every Iowa home football game and many bowl games over the next 17 years. He took pride in displaying his Cubs "W" flag on the front of the house after a Cubs win. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He loved telling his children that he was "Never Miss Hingtgen" in his younger days because he never missed a free throw. He was also a fearless euchre player and was known for winning with little in his hand. Despite many health challenges, he always had a smile and never lost his sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Hingtgen, of Farley; seven children, Steve (Carole) Hingtgen, of Orlando, Fla., Michelle (John) Sweeney, of Tipton, Bob (Jean) Hingtgen, of Peosta, Laura Hingtgen, of Urbandale, Lisa (Jim) Kent, of Waukee, Stephanie Hingtgen, of Urbandale, and Greg
Hingtgen, of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Hannah, Heidi and Ben Hingtgen, Grace and Davis
Hingtgen and Andrew and Isabel Kent; sisters and brothers, his twin, Lorraine (Jack) Salwolke, of Asbury, LaVern Hingtgen, Norma Greve, Mary Ehlers and Verna Scherbring, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his biological parents; the parents who raised him, Harry and Mabel Daly, and their two daughters, Kathleen and Sister Pat.
