FARLEY, Iowa - Eldon John Greenwood, 78, 302 First St., S.W., Farley, died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 1998, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a Knights of Columbus rosary at 5 p.m., a Farley Fire Department and a Farley American Legion service at 7 p.m., and a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Greenwood owned and operated Greenwood Grocery in Farley for more than 50 years. He was the owner since 1946, until his retirement.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1919, in Farley, son of William and Anna (Horsfield) Greenwood. He married Grace Connolly on Nov. 24, 1949, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade; she died on March 12, 1973.

He received his education in the St. Joseph's School, Farley. He is a retired volunteer of the Farley Fire Department and a past city council member. He was a charter member of the Farley Commercial Club. He also was a member of the Farley American Legion Post 656, where he served as past commander; the Farley Knights of Columbus Council 2001; the Iowa Grocery Association; and St. Joseph's Parish, Farley, where he served as a parish board member. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the 79th Signal Division.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria (Dave) Swinehart, of Cedar Falls; seven sons, Pat (Michelle) Greenwood, of Omaha, Neb., Bill Greenwood (and his friend, Carol Brehm), of Farley, Bob (Cheryl) Greenwood, of Waterloo, John (Shari) Greenwood, of Peosta, and Tim Greenwood, Terry (Trisha) Greenwood, and Steve Greenwood, all of Farley; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Tom Greenwood, of Farley; three sisters, Mona (John) Cosgrove, of Cincinnati, and Lois Doyle and Helen Toohey, both of Davenport; and a sister-in-law, Marion Greenwood, of Farley.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Glen and Loras Greenwood.

An Eldon John Greenwood Memorial Fund has been established.
