DYERSVILLE, Iowa - David A. Engler, 75, of Dyersville, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at home, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Ed Petty officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be the parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and an American Legion Service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Engler worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. as a livestock buyer.

He was born on March 22, 1927, in Worthington, son of Edgar and Grace (Kramer) Engler. He married Geraldine Hess on Jan. 27, 1948, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica, the Catholic Order of Foresters and American Legion Post 137 of Dyersville.

He served from 1948 to 1975 as a volunteer fireman in Worthington. He loved outdoor sports, especially fishing and hunting. He was instrumental in helping to develop the area that is now the Worthington Sportsman Club. He loved to fish for walleyes and was known to his fishing friends as "Blackie."

He was a member of the Dubuqueland Chapter of Pheasants Forever and was honored in 1995 and 2002 for outstanding support in preservation of wildlife habitat.

Dave played baseball in high school, the Navy and for semi-pro teams in Worthington, Cascade and Dubuque. He also was an avid New York Yankees fan.

The joys of his life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Geraldine; a daughter, Beverly (Vince) Folkedahl, of Iowa City; two grandchildren, David (Kari) Folkedahl, of Iowa City, and Elizabeth (Daniel) Guza, of Arlington Heights, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Vincent and Gabriel Folkedahl and David Guza; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Alexa and Luke Pietan, of Iowa City; three sisters, Sr. Mary E. Engler, OSF and Mary Jane Beitzel, both of Dubuque, and Ann Green, of Carroll, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Engler, of New Hope, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John Engler.

Memorials are preferred to Hospice of Dubuque and Xavier Grade School.
