HOPKINTON, Iowa -- Mae E. Becker, 79, of 3162 275th St., Hopkinton, died Friday, May 28, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating, assisting Deacon will be Marvin Recker. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where the rosary will be recited at 2 p.m.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1929, in Fillmore, daughter of Joseph and Grace (Callahan) Horsfield. She received her education in the Fillmore area schools and was a graduate of the former St. Martin's High School. She received her teaching certification from Clarke College, Dubuque.

She married Vernon Becker on Sept. 6, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid.

Mae taught in a one-room school house and country schools from 1949 to 1954. She later taught at St. Boniface School in New Vienna for 25 years.

Mae was an avid bowler. She also was a terrific leader for the Polly Pig Tails 4-H club. She taught them with a great enthusiasm, always instilling confidence and creativity. She loved to teach religion and also did it with a vengeance and passion.

She was a member of St. Paul's Parish in Worthington.

Surviving are her husband, Vernon Becker, of Hopkinton; five children, Maribeth (Pat) Potter, of Cascade, Mike (Carrie Johnson) Becker, of Hopkinton, Steve (Sheila) Becker, of Dyersville, Ritanne (Jerry) McClain, of Bondurant, and Sue (Dan) Tauke, of Dyersville; 13 grandchildren, Jermy (Julie) Potter, Jason (Jenn) Potter, Kinsey, Lucas and Logan Johnson, Natalie, Aaron ( fiance, Erin Brennan) and Stephanie Becker, Brandon and Blake McClain, and Matt, Mitch and Nate Tauke; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evadeen (Al) Strang, of Cascade, and Larita (Butch) Kurt and JoAnn Horsfield, both of Monticello; a brother, Dan (Colleen) Horsfield, of Cascade; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Urbain, of Epworth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William Horsfield; and two sisters, Mary Agnes Horsfield and Eleanor (Julie) Urbain.
