HOPKINTON, Iowa - Erma Becker, 87, of Hopkinton, died after a brief illness Saturday evening, Nov. 23, 1996, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton, with the Rev. Harold Drexler officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m.

Erma Clara Becker was born June 16, 1909, on the family farm near Hopkinton, daughter of Michael and Catherine (Besler) Gudenkauf. She married Reynold Becker Feb. 12, 1930, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington. Erma and Reynold farmed their entire married life.

After Reynold's death on March 19, 1945, Erma worked as a bookkeeper at the Hopkinton Co-op for 10 years.

She received her education in Worthington, graduating from St. Paul's. She attended the University of Dubuque for two summers. After receiving her teachers certification, she taught country school in the Hopkinton area. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton, and its altar and rosary society and the Kil Care Club, Hopkinton.

Surviving are three sons, Vernon (Mae) Becker, of Hopkinton, Gilbert (Helen) Becker, of Cedar Rapids, and Kenneth (Kay) Becker, of Hopkinton; four daughters, Therese (Vernon) Melchert and Ethel (Kenneth) Hosch, both of Hopkinton, Janet (Raymond) Marbach, of Manchester, and Virginia (William) Uhlenkamp, of Central City; 39 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Clara Himes, Bernadette Kurt and Gladys Mae Faber, all of Cascade, and Anna Recker, of Monticello; and two brothers, Joe Gudenkauf, of Dyersville, and Vernon Gudenkauf, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two infant children, Vincent and Rita; a granddaughter, Catherine Annis; a great-grandson, Kyle Woods; two brothers, Walter and Louis; and a sister, Catherine Recker.
