MONTICELLO, Iowa - Ernest McElmeel, 68, of Monticello, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello, with Pastor Robert Hannemann officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1932, in Worthington, the son of Eugene and Florence (Wolfe) McElmeel.

He owned and operated McElmeel Excavating in Monticello. He worked for Don Jansen for 10 years until starting McElmeel Excavating north of Monticello until his retirement in 1992.

He attended schools in Worthington and Cascade. He entered the Navy on Dec. 19, 1950, and served aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard.

He married Jeanne Like on Dec. 27, 1955. On Feb. 17, 1990, he married Iris Grigg at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Monticello.

Surviving are his wife, Iris; and the mother of his children, Jeanne McElmeel, of Monticello; two sons, Ernest Jr. "Chuck" (Cary) and Jerry (Donita), both of Monticello; two daughters, Joyce (Don) Hughes and Pam (Mike) Wink, both of Monticello; seven grandchildren, Shannon, Jason, Luke, Nic, Angie, Josh and Jarod; six stepchildren, Cindy Salow (Jeff Spang), of Seaside Calif., Kevin Salow, of Edgewood, Kelly (Mac) Salow, of Delhi, Dean (Annette) Salow, Tony (Jane) Salow and Kim (Kevin) Smith, all of Earlville; 16 stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren; four brothers, John (Sheryl), and Terry, both of Monticello, Eugene (Mary Jo), of Cascade, and Tom (Doris), of Anamosa; and four sisters, Carlyn (Ray) Petlon, of Manchester, Shirley (Robert) Storm, of Cedar Rapids, Susan (Leo) Tjaden and Linda (Dan) Bauer, both of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy Joe, in 1961; and a brother, Gerald in 1942.
