WORTHINGTON, Iowa - Dorothy D. Laban, 86, of Worthington, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Phil Kruse officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to

8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where an Altar and Rosary Society rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and a parish scripture service will be at 5 p.m.

She was born on Oct. 8, 1922, in Farley, daughter of Fred and Mary (Steger) Soppe. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Farley with the Class of 1941.

She married Anthony J. "Tony" Laban on May 8, 1945, in Farley; he preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2000.

Together, they farmed in the Worthington area all of their lives.

She enjoyed working in her yard and her gardens, keeping things very neat. She loved her cats and took care of them faithfully. Dorothy was a special lady and will be greatly missed by her daughter, grandchildren and all who knew her. She was a woman of courage who never gave up.

Surviving are her daughter, Judy Gaul, of Farley; two grandchildren, Michelle Gaul, of Gainesville, Va., and Jason Gaul, of Chicago; four sisters-in-law, Vivian Althoff, of Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, Frances Kula, of Marion, Dorothy Schafer, of Monticello, and Helen Laban, of Bernard.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, Louis Gaul; her brother, Russell "LeRoy" Soppe; and five sisters, Lucille Recker, Bernice "Ginger" Schumacher, Lillian McCoy, Anita Gibbons and Virginia Soppe.
