Marcellus J. "Mac" Pottebaum, age 90 of Stonehill Care Center and formerly 1318 Jackson Street, Dubuque passed away at 7:31 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Stonehill Care Center of natural causes

Rev. Eugene Kutsch will celebrate the Funeral Mass for Marcellus J. "Mac" Pottebaum
on Saturday at St. Patrick's Church, 15th and Iowa Streets, at 10:00 a.m.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where Military Rites will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6.

To celebrate Mac's life, friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Behr's Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street

The Parish Wake Service will be said at Behr's on Friday at 3:00 p.m.

Marcellus J. Pottebaum was born on August 12, 1921 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Joseph H. and Frances Mary (Friedman) Pottebaum.

Mac received his elementary education at St. Anthony's Grade School. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish for over 60 years, serving on the Parish Council for 3 years and as an usher for over 50 years.

Mac was a member of the National Guard for 3 years in the 133rd Infantry, 34th (Red Bull) Division and was honorably discharged as a Sargent.

Mac worked for the City of Dubuque Fire Department for 35 years retiring as a Lieutenant. Mac also owned and operated the M.J. Pottebaum Fire Safety Business for 44 years. He then worked as a fire equipment technician until July of 2011. Mac was a Past President of the Retired Fireman's Association, an avid gardener and antique car enthusiast. He enjoyed spending the holidays with his family.

Mac is survived by:
His sister, Rita Garner, Cassville, Wisconsin
2 Sisters-in-law, Charlene Pottebaum, Mechanicsville, Iowa and
Bernice Pottebaum, Dubuque, Iowa
and by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews

Mac was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers: Louis, Cletus and Reynold Pottebaum.

Memorials may be given to Alverno Apartments, 3525 Windsor Ave, Dubuque, IA 52001

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque.
