Paul J. Oberfoell, 43, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully at 6:00 a.m. on October 5, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, after a difficult battle with cancer.

Paul was born on November 6, 1970, in Dubuque, IA, to Albert M. Oberfoell and Carol M. (Timmerman) Oberfoell.

To honor Paul's life, funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 10:30 am, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Ave, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Paul's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014, at Behr Funeral Home, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Paul was a graduate of Wahlert High School, where he ran cross-country and was honored with homecoming king of his senior class. He also graduated from Loras College. He grew up in the Robin Hood neighborhood working many years delivering the TH newspaper. After college he worked at Dubuque Golf and Country Club, always enjoying his friendship with the "bridge ladies." He later worked in groundskeeping at Hillcrest Apartments, where he also lived, always trying to keep the area free of litter.

Due to his deep faith, Paul was a friend to all and saw others through the eyes of Christ. His hobby was helping and visiting with others, walking, listening to music, and watching movies: his favorite being "Forest Gump," from which he could always recite lines. Life was like a box of chocolates to him—people were the various chocolates.

Paul was a long-time member of Recovery Int., NAMI Dubuque, and Holy Ghost Parish, where he was a choir member and cantor.

He is survived by his parents, his brothers, a sister, a niece and nephews: Richard J. (Sun Hee) and Xavier, Iowa City; Gary A. (Katie) and Sara and Brady, Pewaukee, WI; Beth A. (John) Suehr and Aiden and Tristen, Palatine, IL.
Paul was preceded in death by his grandparents and recently by his aunt, Rosemary V. Timmerman, who passed away on October 2, 2014, lighting the way for him.

The family wishes to thank the nurses in Mercy's Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit and Sue Houselog, the Palliative Care Nurse, who were a constant support to him and the family.
