Epworth's Last Surviving Civil War Veteran Dies
Dr. Franklin Reyner, Epworth's last surviving Civil War veteran, died at his home in Epworth Friday night at 9:10 o'clock after a few days illness. Dr. Reyner died on his eighty-sixth birthday, having been born at Blandonsburg, Maryland, Sep. 2, 1841.
Funeral services were conducted at the Reyner home in Epworth, Monday morning at 9 o'clock. The funeral services and burial were in charge of members of Hyde Clark post of the Grand Army of the Republic, Dubuque, of which Dr. Reyner was a member. Dr. Reyner enlisted in July, 1861, in Company A, 9th Iowa Infantry. He was discharged in December, 1862. He attended Rush Medical College and graduated in 1875 and began his practice in Epworth, where he practised until his death.
Burial was at Mt. Hope cemetery in Maquoketa where a firing squad accompanied the body for the last military honor.
