SHERRILL, Iowa - Lawrence "Larry", "Tud" Hefel, 80, of 16487 South Mound Road, Sherrill, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m.

Monday at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill, with the Rev. Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 5:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

He was born on April 17, 1927, in North Buena Vista, son of John and Marie (Ludovissy) Hefel. He married Alice Hying, on April 12, 1948, at St. Raphael Cathedral. He also served in the Army.

Larry was a masonry contractor, and worked with his brother as Hefel Brothers Construction for many years. Larry was known for his quality workmanship and truly was an "artist in his trade."

Larry had a great outlook in life, seldom complained, and approached every task with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time outdoors especially fishing and coon hunting, and he was an avid collector of vintage lawn mowers.

Surviving are his wife, Alice; two daughters, Linda (Don Sloan) Johnson, of Stillwater Minn., and Madonna Miller, of Dubuque; four sons, Ron Hefel and Jeff Hefel, both of Dubuque, Roderick (Deirdre) Hefel, of St. Charles, Ill., and Keith Hefel, of Elburn, Ill.; sixteen grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hilda (Gerry) Engelken, of New Vienna; and two brothers, Bernard (Adeline) Hefel, of Dubuque, and Eugene (Betty) Hefel, of Balltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carla Hefel, on Aug. 29, 2005; and brothers, Philip, Vince, Louis, Mick and Anthony, in infancy.

A Larry "Tud" Hefel Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Mercy Medical Center, especially the surgical and O.R. departments for all the care and compassion that they showed Larry and his family.
