Gertrude Emma Meis, 87, of 3280 Hillcrest Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Chapel at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

Mrs. Meis worked at Wahlert High School for 10 years as secretary for Principal Rev. Guter.

She was born on Nov. 30, 1916, in Dubuque, daughter of Walter and Matilda (Grimme) Hartley. She married Stanley J. Meis on Nov. 24, 1938, at St. Mary's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death in July 1992.

Surviving are two children, Kristine (Arnold) Digman, of Platteville, Wis., and John S. Meis, of East Dubuque, Ill.; three grandchildren, Kimberly Ohnesorge, Kelli (Dave) Smutzler and John (Stacy) Ohnesorge; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Paige Smutzler; and two sisters, Phyllis Markward and Betty Hauth, both of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gladys Frohs; and three brothers, George, Lester and Sumner Hartley.

A Gertrude E. Meis Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Visiting Nurse Association and Finley Home Health Care.
