Lylas E. Hines, 68, of 579 Lowell St., died at 9:06 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at home, following a long illness.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Edgewood (Iowa) Cemetery.

Mrs. Hines worked in the Dubuque Community School District cafeterias for more than 12 years.

She was born on April 19, 1935, in Elkport, Iowa, daughter of George and Nina (Borrett) Amling.

She married Harold "Harry" "Mel" Hines on Sept. 20, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque. She had lived in Dubuque most of her life.

She was involved with Girl Scouts for 25 years. She also volunteered at Irving Elementary School for four years until illness forced her to retire.

She enjoyed ceramics, needlepoint, crafts and cooking.

Surviving are her husband, Harold "Harry" "Mel" Hines, of Dubuque; three daughters, Vicki Carnicle, Toni (Dale) Linden and Kim Hines, all of Dubuque; a granddaughter, Samantha Linden, of Dubuque; three brothers, Cletus (Bernadine) Amling and Lorace "Rick" (Linda) Amling, both of Dubuque, and Linus (Louise) Amling, of Colesburg, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Dean Carnicle, in 1956; and a sister, Janice.

A Lylas E. Hines Memorial Fund has been established.
