Roger "Harlow" Hayes, 80, of 1280 Pamela Court, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 3:30 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1922, in Dubuque, the oldest son of Klee and Gladys (Hoskins) Hayes. He married Yvonne Ann "Bonnie" Hantelman on Aug. 7, 1943, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. He was in the Army during World War II, from Sept. 6, 1943, until Feb. 15, 1946.

He was a 58-year member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, a lifetime member of the brick layers union and a past member of the musician's union. Harlow also was a charter member of Thunder Hills Golf and Country Club, Peosta, Iowa.

He enjoyed playing the piano, for which he held a certificate of music. He also enjoyed taking care of his pets and observing the beauty of wildlife.

Harlow loved his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. All who knew him will miss him.

Surviving are his wife, Yvonne "Bonnie" Hayes, of Dubuque; a daughter, Dawn Marie (John) Morgan, of Mason City, Iowa; a granddaughter, Kara Pinckney; three step granddaughters, Jodi (Lance) Stedman, Amy (Matt) Tracy and Mary Morgan; three great-grandchildren, Dylan Tracy, Lucas Stedman and Olivia Stedman; a brother, John "Bob" (Ruth) Hayes; a sister-in-law, Gloria Skemp-Borley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Klee and Gladys Hayes; and his grandparents, Edward and Ethel Hayes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Harlow Hayes Memorial Fund.

The family would like to thank William Dall, M.D., his nurse, Tanya, and Hospice of Dubuque.
