Cascade Pioneer, Dec. 11, 1924

Christopher Cox, one of the pioneer settlers of Dubuque county, died last Saturday. Mr. Cox was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1841, and came to Iowa with his parents when he was three years old. The family first settled on a farm between Cedar Rapids and Marion, but later came to Dubuque county. Mr. Cox grew to manhood and was married to Johanna Collins, who died in 1914. He engaged in the mercantile business in Cascade, succeeding I. M. Snyder in the store later and now owned by B. F. Crawford. Mr. Cox was in business here for a number of years and then, returned to the farm in Prairie Creek township. Ten children were born to him, eight of whom survive, four sons, Christopher of Seneca, S. D., Thomas of East Dubuque and Joseph and James of Dubuque; four daughters, Della of Cascade, Josie and Theresa of Dubuque and Sister Mary Lina, B. V. M., Mt. Carmel. One sister, Mrs John M Linehan, resides in Chicago, and brother Thomas lives in Dubuque. Two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. D. W. Linehan, Mrs. C. F. Smyth and James and Daniel Cox. Twenty-one grandchildren also mourn his death. Requiem Mass was celebrated at ten o'clock Tuesday morning at Sylva Switch and burial took place at Garry Owen.
