DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Cletus J. "Clete" Tauke, 85, of Dyersville, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with Monsignor Ed Petty officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137, of Dyersville. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and an American Legion service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1918, in Petersburg, son of William and Emma (Vaske) Tauke. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945.

He married Jeanette C. Bagge on May 24, 1948, in Petersburg. Together they dairy farmed for nearly 40 years in the Garnavillo area until they retired in Dyersville in 1984.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1734, the American Legion Post 137, of Dyersville, and the 40/8 Voiture 584.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette, of Dyersville; a son, Robert (Lois) Tauke, of Cascade; a daughter, Sarah (Sam) Schmelzer, of Asbury; four grandchildren, Renee Paylor, Andy Tauke and Amy and Angela Schmelzer; a great-grandson, Antonio Paylor; and a sister, Leonette Wessels, of Garnavillo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence, and a brother and sister in infancy.
