Hattie C. Riniker

Telegraph Herald - Nov 10, 2003

Hattie Christine (Schmid) Riniker went to meet her Lord at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, with two of her daughters at her side.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Private family burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

Born into the large, German immigrant family of Richard and Freida Schmid on April 14, 1917, in Galena, Ill., she had 16 siblings; 12 survived to adulthood.

For most of her adult life, she was a housewife on a farm near Dubuque. However, she lived in California from 1957 to 1960. After retiring and moving into Dubuque, Hattie worked in the Foster Grandparent Program at Audubon Elementary School in Dubuque.

She was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Dubuque.

She had a zest for life, enjoying many activities over the years such as sewing, baking, gardening, Bible study and involvement at her church and traveling with both the Foster Grandparent Program and trips to visit her daughters and grandchildren around the country. Over the years, many holiday trips took her to her children's homes, where she enjoyed baking Christmas cookies and playing with her grandchildren.

Surviving are three daughters, Donna (Don) Schiers, of Fort Collins, Colo., Barbara (Ken) Cook, of Dubuque, and Katherine Keil, of Ruston, La. She had 10 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are two brothers, Frank Schmid, of Monroe, Ill., and Richard Schmid, Jr., of Galena; and three sisters, Clara Blum and Bernice Edwards, both of Galena, and Elsie (Jerry) McNett, of Rockford, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Riniker; an infant daughter, Judith Ann; and a son-in-law, Dr. Kenneth W. Keil.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1780 White St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque and Stonehill Care Center for the tender care she received from the 3 North staff during her long residence with them.
