Fortified by the sacraments of the church, Mrs. Judith A. Meis, 62, of 615 E. 24th St., went peacefully to meet her Maker at 1:41 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, after a brief bout with cancer.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a Sacred Heart Parish Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Meis practiced cosmetology for 33 years and was employed at the former Di-Ann Beauty Salon on University Avenue. Following her retirement from cosmetology, she served as an active volunteer at Stonehill Care Center, as a resident advocate, and as co-chairman of the annual ice cream social for 15 years. Coterminous with this service, she served Wahlert High School as the assistant debate and forensics coach, earning the Diamond Key Award from the National Forensic League for directing the efforts of students in the pursuit of excellence, while for 12 years, she ably assisted and encouraged her husband as advisor to Wahlert's Key Club, mentoring many students in the process.

She was born on June 27, 1941, in Dubuque, daughter of Walter J. and Rose (Honkamp) Reuter. She married Vincent F. Meis on Aug. 20, 1966, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and enjoyed a very happy marriage.

She attended Sacred Heart School, the former Immaculate Conception Academy and Capri Cosmetology College in Dubuque.

Judy was a dynamic member of Speakeasy Postmasters 3588 and a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Her life service to others exemplified her commitment to Christian values, to wit and beatitudinal living.

Surviving are her husband, Vincent F. Meis; an uncle, Norbert Honkamp, of Sacramento, Calif.; an aunt, Eva Liston, of Lake View, Iowa; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a plethora of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two uncles, Mark Reuter and Virgil Honkamp; and two aunts, Mrs. Ed (Odelia) Strait and Mrs. John (Rita) Chappell.
