Virgil J. "Virg" Denlinger, 79, of 215 Clarke Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at ManorCare Health Services.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a wake service at noon.

Mr. Denlinger owned and operated Denlinger Insurance Agency for 50 years and was past president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Dubuque.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1923, in Mason City, Iowa, son of George and Mary (Roach) Denlinger.

He married Norma Mulligan on Oct. 15, 1949, at Nativity Catholic Church. Virgil and Norma raised, showed and trained English Pointers and helped organize the original Dubuque Kennel Club.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church where he was an usher, Extraordinary Minister and past member of the finance committee. He also was a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 510. He participated as a member of the Golf Tournament Committee for the Tri-State Independent Blind Society for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling over his lifetime. He played minor league baseball with the Rockford Cubs in his younger years and also played fastpitch softball with the Industrial League of Dubuque in the 1950s. He coached Holy Name League baseball in the late 1960s and early '70s.

He was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather who enjoyed doing things with his family and participating in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting with his sons.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Denlinger, of Dubuque; four children, James E. (Susan) Denlinger and William J. (Carol) Denlinger, both of Dubuque, Lynn M. Denlinger, of Anchorage, Ala., and Thomas A. (Tina) Denlinger, of Cuba City, Wis.; six grandchildren, Jason J., Julie Ann, Trent A., Theron A. and Ava Marie Denlinger and Adam Henderson; two sisters, Viola Gray and Maxine Edwards, both of Davenport, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law, Gordon Gray and James Edwards.

A Virgil Denlinger Memorial Fund has been established.
