ABBOT DIED SUNDAY

Head of New Melleray Abbey is Claimed by Death

Abbot Alberie of New Melleray Abbey passed to his eternal reward at the Monastery at 12:20 Sunday morning. The death of the venerable religious followed a brief illness due to infirmities of old age.

Abbot Alberie's name before entering the Cistercian Order was Dennis Donlea and he was born in County Cork, Ireland, 84 years ago. He became a monk in Ireland when 24 years old and came to America 33 years ago, and became associated with the Order of New Melleray

Abbot Alberie was a man of natural abilities who ruled wisely and prudently for a number of years. His death is a distinct loss to his Oder and elicits regret wherever he was known. His long career as ruler of his order was full of honor and faithful steward has been called to his accounting.

The Requiem Mass was offered at the Monastery chapel Monday morning. Father Bruno being the celebrant. The interment was made in the Monastery cemetery.
