Michael A. Weitz, 49, of Albuquerque, N. M., formerly of Dubuque, died of pneumonia Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at home, after a long illness with asthma and epilepsy.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be at a later date in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1954, in Dubuque, son of Aloysius and Mary (Rohowetz) Weitz. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1973.

He lived to promote good health and nutrition and operated Dubuque's first whole foods store, The Life Force, from 1974 to 1982.

He was an environmental and peace activist and worked hard to stop the greatest obstacle to peace, abortion, as a member of the National Right to Life coalition.

Surviving are his father, Al, of Dubuque; seven brothers, Greg Weitz, of South Carolina, Paul (Judy) Weitz, of Morley, Iowa, Daniel Weitz, Tom (Linda) Weitz, Jerry (Kris) Weitz and Jim (JoAnn) Weitz, all of Dubuque, and Bruce (Crystal) Weitz, of Ankeny, Iowa; a sister, Mary Nell (Steve) Moore, of Sherrill, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary C. Weitz, on Nov. 7, 1990.

In lieu of flowers, a Michael Weitz Memorial fund has been established.
