Staff Sgt. Leon W. Nichols, Ret., 70, formerly of Dubuque, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in Ohio.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bible Baptist Church, 940 Walker St., Dubuque. Private family burial will follow. The Brough-Getts Funeral Home, Miamisburg, Ohio, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on July 8, 1933, in Pekin, Ill., son of Marion and Dorothy (Blakley) Nichols.

He retired as a Staff Sgt. E-6 in the Army in 1972. Since that time, Leon worked as a riverboat pilot.

Surviving are his wife, Marlene; two daughters, Ms. Susan Strizak and Mrs. Gail Heinold, both of Dubuque; a son, Donald Nichols, of California; a stepdaughter, of Indiana; a stepson, of Tennessee; a brother, John Nichols, of Illinois; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and an infant son.
