BERNARD, Iowa - Dale J. Cook, 60, of 5376 Larkin Road, Bernard, died at 3:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, as the result of injuries sustained in a farming accident near Bernard.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Cook farmed most of his life in Dubuque County. He also served as a commissioner of the Dubuque soil and water conservation district for the past five years.

He was born on May 20, 1943, in N. Buena Vista, son of Charles and Eleanor (Hefel) Cook. He grew up in N. Buena Vista. He married Alice M. Wolf on Sept. 25, 1965, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville.

Dale also served his country in the National Guard for six years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray.

He loved to socialize and was known to many as "Cowboy." He especially enjoyed karaoke, country line-dancing and playing cards.

Surviving are his wife, Alice M. Cook, of Bernard; seven sons, Tom (Jean) Cook, of Sherrill, Troy Cook, of Bellevue, Todd (special friend, Kathy Placke) Cook, Tony (special friend, Karrie Thole) Cook, both of Bernard, Tim (Jodi) Cook, of Zwingle and Travis and Terry Cook, both at home; three daughters, Tricia (Terry) McElmeel, of Dubuque, Tanya (special friend, Steve Kluesner) Cook, of Bernard, and Tara Cook, at home; his parents, Charles and Eleanor Cook, of Sherrill; five brothers, Leon (Darlene) Cook, Wayne (Bonnie) Cook, both of Dubuque, Ronald (Janet) Cook, of Balltown, Joseph (special friend, Vickie Arison) Cook, of Muncie, Ind., and Neil (Tamie) Cook, of Holy Cross; three sisters, Sharon (Stan) Adams, of Sherrill, Charlene (Bill) Brimeyer, of Balltown and Lois (Dan) Thurston, of Davenport; 10 grandchildren, Adam, Amanda and Matt Cook, Clare and Charlie Cook, Autumn Cook, Courtney, Kendra, Mitchell and Madison McElmeel; and many nieces and nephews.

A Dale J. Cook Memorial Fund has been established.
