PEOSTA, Iowa - Alice M. Burds, 73, of 17159 Meadow Lark Dr., Peosta, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Centralia. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where there will be a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Burds worked at Theisen's for many years in the lawn and garden department. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Burds A.I. Service.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1930, in Monticello, daughter of Michel and Lucille (Reisdorf) Schmitt. She married John F. "Jeff" Burds on Oct. 7, 1950, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta.

She was a member of the garden club and various card clubs. She also was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She was vice regent for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She volunteered at Manor Care in her spare time.

Surviving are her husband, John F. "Jeff" Burds, of Peosta; four children, Ronald (Ann) Burds, of Dubuque, Michael M. Burds, Karen (Ken) Thimmesch, of Williamsburg, and Carol (Bob) McHugh, of Kimballtown; six grandchildren, Bart, Alex and Joe Burds, Patrick Burds and Erin and Jeanna Thimmesch; three brothers, Harold (Madonna) Schmitt, of Centralia, Robert (Mary) Schmitt, of Dubuque, and Jim (Ann) Schmitt, of Dyersville; four sisters, Evelyn Hammes, of Emmett, Idaho, Dorothea (Bill) VonAh and MaryLou Lindecker, both of Dubuque, and Rosie (Ed) Horsfield, of Epworth; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant twin children, Dennis and Denise; two brothers, Gerald and George Schmitt; and four sisters, Marguerite Richter, Marcella Schmitt, Gertrude McGovern and Bonnie Moses.
