Merrill M. Vanderloo, D.V.M., 78, of 2965 Arbor Oaks Court, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Private family services will be at a later date. Private family burial will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

Dr. Vanderloo owned and operated Vanderloo & White Animal Hospital from 1951, when he joined his father's practice, until his retirement in 1989.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1924, in Webster City, Iowa, son of V.B. and Evangelyn (Blakesley) Vanderloo. He married Betty Mae Withers on June 25, 1949, in Memphis, Tenn.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1943. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific as a lieutenant in World War II. He graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1951.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and was past president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. He served on the Dubuque County Fair Board for many years. He also was a member of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club, 990 Club and Rovers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Dad, you were always wise and wonderful to those creatures great and small. We know you're in Heaven now to take care of them all.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Mae, of Dubuque; three children, Bill (Cynthia) Vanderloo, of Prairie Village, Kan., Margie (Paul) Grevas, of Dubuque, and Bob (JoAnn) Vanderloo, of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Virginia (Wayne) Collins, of Rio Verde, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren, J.W. Vanderloo, Gretchen, Andrew and Nick Grevas and Alissa, Lukas and Jacie Vanderloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Janece; and a brother, Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Westminster Presbyterian Church, The Finley Hospital, the Dubuque Humane Society and a charity of your choice.

The Vanderloo family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Mark Liaboe, Dr. Charles Longo and The Finley Hospital Intensive Care Unit staff for all of their wonderful care and support.
