George was born on April 28, 1923, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Matthew and Lena (Weber) Bogarth

George was raised in Dubuque and attended Fulton and Jefferson Schools. Following his father's passing, his mother remarried and they moved to North Terra Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Otter Creek High School in Indiana in 1941. His stepfather Francis Henry was a commercial fisherman, they shared work and both enjoyed the love of nature and the outdoors. On December 17, 1941, George enlisted in the US Navy for 6 years. He spent most of that time on the "Sante Fe." He was very proud of America and his Navy service. He made many lifetime friends aboard the "Sante Fe" which was nicknamed the "Lucky Lady," as it weathered many battles and storms. All of his life he retold many Navy stories. After he was honorably discharged he returned to Dubuque. He married Velma "Billie" Baumgartner and together they raised 3 daughters, she preceded him in death. He worked for Klauer Mfg. Co., The Dubuque Pack, and for 30 years for the City of Dubuque Water Dept as an Engineer and Operator retiring in 1986. On August 18, 1979 he married Dorothy (Baker) Gross and inherited 7 more daughters. After they retired they went on several Navy Reunion trips, Arizona, Niagaria Falls, and Cubs bus trips. He was member of Grand View United Methodist Church, American Legion and the VFW. George enjoyed cards, gardening, wood working, fishing and when he was younger hunting. He spent many hours at Swiss Valley, Trout fishing. He cooked a lot of the trout for his family and friends. George really enjoyed the many family functions. He will be missed by all. In George's world there were no strangers. Rest in peace my friend.
