Paul R. Sutton, 83, of 733 Ramona St., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of complications from a fall.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. There will be a celebration of Paul's life from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Happy's Place. The Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sutton was a city of Dubuque police officer from 1947 until his retirement as a captain in 1975.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1919, in Dubuque, son of Nicholas and Anna (Heitz) Sutton. He married Zita Zwack on Aug. 30, 1941; she died in 1990.

He faithfully visited the residents at Stonehill Care Center every Monday morning for more than 25 years.

Surviving are two children, Bridget (Ron) Manternach, of Cascade, Iowa, and Juanita (Jim) Collins, of Richfield, Minn.; four grandchildren, Paula and Tracey Manternach, Kate (Ron) Nunes and Colleen Collins; a great-grandchild, Elizabeth Nunes; two brothers, John (Peggy) Sutton and Bernard (Leona) Sutton, both of Bellevue, Iowa; a sister, Gloria Sutton, of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Timothy, at birth; two brothers, Nick and Robert; and four sisters, Maryann, Jean, Lela and Kathryn.

A Paul Sutton Memorial Fund has been established.
