Sandra Joan "Sandy" Nicks, 73, of 2741 Washington St., died at 7:10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at home with her family by her side following a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Garner officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 8 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1938, in Royal Oak, Mich., daughter of Cecil and Eleanor (Arthofer) McMahon. She married John "Jack" Nicks on Aug. 23, 1958, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 2000.

Sandy moved to Dubuque following high school and worked for Dun & Bradstreet and ESKA Co. She lastly worked as a bartender for Spielman's Tap and the Do Drop In.

She enjoyed bowling and bingo and her annual trip to Vegas, although her favorite time was spent with her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her three children, Jackie (Dan) Miller, of Dubuque, Debbie (Mark) Burns, of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Dan (Lisa) Nicks, of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Miller, Nathan and Alison Powers and Danielle and Sam Nicks; great-grandchildren, Arabella and Carson Haynes; her mother, Eleanor McMahon; and a sister, Ginger Subic.

She also was preceded in death by her father, Cecil; sisters, Nancy (Billie) Alm and Pat Anderson; a son-in-law, Tom Powers; and her father- and mother-in-law, Ray and Vi Nicks.
