EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. - Merlin R. "Merle" Hayes, 68, of 266 Beecher St., East Dubuque, died suddenly at 3:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, from natural causes.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League and the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Hayes worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co.

He was born on Sept. 14, 1934, in Iowa City, son of Joseph and Delores (Sabers) Hayes. He married Germaine B. Hinderman on Nov. 30, 1957, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque.

He was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a former member of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 150-A. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He loved playing dice with his wife and family. He enjoyed woodworking, cards and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to cook for his family. He will be sadly missed by his wife, family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Germaine B. (Hinderman) Hayes; eight children, Mike (Doris) Hayes, of East Dubuque, Joan (Tom) Collins, of Mount Hope, Wis., Laurie (Brad) McNally, of La Motte, Iowa, Barb (Ron Jr.) Markus, Sharon (Rod) Chapman, Ruth Hayes and Mark (Jodi) Hayes, all of Dubuque; and Susan (Rusty) Hall, of Galena; 18 grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Burton, of Urbandale, Iowa; and two brothers, Gerald Hayes, of Dubuque, and Keith (Donna) Hayes, of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Donna Rezac and Kay Ann Hayes, in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, a Merlin R. Hayes Memorial Fund has been established.
