Walter W. Lovett

Walter W. Lovett, 85, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 743 Roberts St., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at the care center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on July 16, 1918, in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Walter and Edith (Hayes) Lovett.

He married Darlene Farley on July 19, 1939, at St. Joseph Church, Waterloo, Iowa. They had been married for 64 years. They belonged to Nativity Parish since May 1962. Walter and Darlene were square dancers with the Tri-State Twirlers, where he was president for 2½ years.

Mr. Lovett worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 42 years. He started as a machinist apprentice. He worked in Waterloo, Council Bluffs and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Chicago, and Minneapolis as a foreman. He came to Dubuque in 1962, as a general foreman.

After his retirement in 1979, Walter started playing golf at Bunker Hill. He had two holes in one.

He served on the board of Project Concern. He served as a volunteer fireman for five years in Park Forest, Ill. Walter also sang with the Nativity Choir and helped with bingo. He was a member of Nativity Rosary and Guild. Walter also was a member of Mercy Seniorsize Club.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene; two sons, Robert (Kathy) Lovett, of Savage, Minn., and Joseph (Debby) Lovett, of Dubuque; four daughters, Martha (Jim) Farber, of Dubuque, Joyce (Jim) Lyons, of Zimmerman, Minn., Valerie (Dave) Roll, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Anne (Erine) Stone, of Red Wing, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, Vicky (Doug) Murphy, Brent (Megan) Lovett, Shelby Lovett, Leighton Lovett, Jeffrey (Janet) Lovett, Jody Collins, Jessica (Jeff) Holst, Kristina Gleeson, Matthew (Kimberly) Hendricks, Andrea Daedlow, Andrew and Eric Stone, Seth Farber and Alicia Roll; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jacob Murphy, Brandie Jo, Corey and Jenna Collins, Haley Daedlow and Cayden Lovett; and a sister, Joan (Philip) Snow, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Marian Lovett, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; and a grandson, Tony Lyons.

A Walter Lovett Memorial Fund has been established.
