Mrs. Orvin S. (Viola) Sjobakken, 87, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 1175½ High Bluff St., died at 4:37 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, at the center.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Regina Caeli Chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sjobakken was formerly employed at the Finley School of Nursing as a house mother.

She was born on Feb. 15, 1916, in Cresco, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Amanda (Barnes) Doherty. She married Orvin Sjobakken on Aug. 30, 1938, in Cresco; he died on July 8, 1969.

She was active in Girl Scouting for more than 25 years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and its Rosary Society.

Vi was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.

Surviving are a daughter, Jean A. (Richard) Lees, of Carroll, Iowa; two sons, John R. (Jan) Sjobakken and Gerald M. (Ruth) Sjobakken, both of Dubuque; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Helen Doherty, of Canton, Minn.

She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Jess (Harriet) Thompson, Mrs. Emmet (Edna) McGee and Mrs. Joseph (Camilla) Beurskens; and two brothers, Norbert "Red" Doherty and Leo Doherty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Stonehill Care Center, 3485 Windsor Ave., Dubuque, Iowa 52001.
