Matthew Paul Smith, 6-year-old son of LaraLee Simmons, of Dubuque, and Robert Paul Smith, died at 9:39 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, as the result of continued complications from an automobile accident in 1997.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1997, in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Robert Paul Smith and LaraLee J. Simmons. He grew up in Dubuque and attended Eisenhower School.

He loved music, especially Allison Kraus and Elvis Presley. Matthew's strength and determination were an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.

Surviving are his mother, LaraLee Simmons, of Dubuque; his father, Robert Paul Smith; three sisters, Kendra-Lee Nelson, of Frankfurt, Kan., and Emily Nelson and Clarissa Smith, both of Dubuque; a brother, Patrick Nelson, of Frankfurt; his maternal grandparents, Judy Simmons, of Dubuque, and Larry Simmons, of Onalaska, Texas; his paternal grandparents, Paul and Darlene Smith, of Shell Rock, Iowa; his maternal great-grandmother, Dolores Simmons, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; his maternal great-grandparents, John "Jack" (MaryAnn) Rolling, of Dubuque; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, John A. Simmons, in August 2000.

A Matthew Paul Smith Memorial Fund has been established by the family.
