Thomas J. Crall, Jr., 76, husband of Charleen (McMahon) Crall, of 400 Randolph, Chicago, formerly of Dubuque, Michigan, California and Engelwood, Fla., died Monday, July 14, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard, Iowa, with the Rev. John McClean officiating. Burial will in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, Iowa, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Crall worked in sales marketing and was product manager at the Fort James Paper Co., in Chicago, until his retirement.

He was born on April 29, 1927, in Chicago, son of Thomas J. and Helen (Nolan) Crall. On Aug. 14, 1925, in Chicago, he was united in marriage to Charleen M. McMahon.

He was a graduate of De La Salle High School in Chicago. He also attended Loyola University in Chicago, and Wayne State in Detroit.

He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in Europe from 1945 to 1946.

Thomas was a former member of the Teamsters Union in Chicago, the Esquire-Elks in Michigan, and was a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Tom was one of the founders of the Dubuque Downtown Neighborhood Council and a member of the Dubuque Anti-Drug, Gang and Violence Committee. He also served on the Dubuque Housing Commission. He was the National Vice President of the American Association of Meat Processors. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Florida, and a former member of St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque, where he served on the parish council. He also served as Eucharistic minister and lector at both parishes.

Thomas was interested in his neighbors, his church, his family and everyone he met.

Surviving are his wife, Charleen Crall, of Chicago; a son, Christopher Crall, of Venice, Fla.; a grandson, Christopher Crall, Jr., of St. George, Utah; and a sister, Phyllis Hoise, of Galena, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Theodore Zastro; and a sister, Clara Gross.
