Deceased Name: Viola P. Engler

Viola P. Engler, 91, formerly of Sherrill, Iowa, and Applewood Apartments, Dubuque, died Friday, July 24, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Rosonke officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1918, in Spechts Ferry, daughter of Ferdinand and Cecelia (Motsch) Birkel. She married Raymond Engler on June 14, 1949, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill; he preceded her in death on April 10, 1995.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Viola was employed at Stampfer Department Store for more than 15 years in housekeeping. She developed many good friendships with the clerks.

Viola enjoyed going out to eat at Village Inn, and playing bingo and euchre.

Surviving are her brother, Herman (Mary Lou) Birkel, of Sherrill; a brother-in-law, James Hird, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; 10 sisters; and a brother.

A Viola Engler Memorial Fund has been established.
