Deceased Name: Leander P. Herrig

Leander P. "Lee" Herrig, 87, of 1940 Catherine St., died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Herrig was a self-employed barber for many years, retiring in 1989.

He was born on April 1, 1919, in St. Donatus, Iowa, son of George and Catherine (Kalmes) Herrig. He married Mary Lidwina Heinz on Sept. 30, 1950, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta.

He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945 as a radar man.

He was a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, the Disabled American Veterans and St. Raphael Parish.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, of Dubuque; eight children, Ann (Dave) Greiling, of Ogden, Utah, Paul (Paula) Herrig, George (Susan) Herrig, Phyllis (Cary) Matthews and Carol (Dan) Waddick, all of Dubuque, Thomas (Dolly) Herrig and Michele (Tom) Raynak, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Jean Herrig, of Tiffen, Iowa; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Eldon T. (Marge) Herrig, of Dubuque; a sister, Adeline McAndrews, of Dubuque; and two sisters-in-law, Catherine Heinz, of Dubuque, and Sophie Blong, of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Lee Herrig, in 1988; a brother, Harold; and two sisters, Sedelia and Elvira. A sister-in-law, Dolores Herrig, died Monday, June 5, 2006.

A Leander P. Herrig Memorial Fund has been established.
