Deceased Name: VIRGIL J. HAYES

Services for Virgil J. Hayes, 68, 8826 Route 52 South, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine's (Iowa) Catholic Church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be at parish wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Hayes was a maintenance supervisor at Mount St. Francis since 1958, and thoroughly enjoyed his work.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1927, in Holy Cross, Iowa, son of Edward and Catherine (Ellerbach) Hayes. He died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 1995, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit.

He married Joan L. Dempewolf on Nov. 28, 1953, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, Iowa.

He was a Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and its holy name society, Catholic Order of Foresters and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was delighted in watching and feeding "his" birds and taught his grandchildren to recognize and love the birds too. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Joan L. Hayes; a daughter, Mary K. (Greg) Jorgenson, of Dubuque; four sons, Pat J. (Debbie) Hayes, Paul J. (Julie) Hayes, Mark J. Hayes and Daniel J. Hayes, all of Dubuque; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Frances) Clemen and Mrs. Clara Klaren, both of Holy Cross, Mrs. Evalena Schultz, of Anamosa, Iowa, and Mrs. Viola Avery, of Dubuque; and two brothers, Louis A. (Ruth) Hayes, of Holy Cross, and Clem (Dorothy) Hayes, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Mary Hayes, on Sept. 29, 1960; a son, Joseph V. Hayes, on July 28, 1973; and two sisters, Genevieve Duster and Delia Duster.

A Virgil J. Hayes Memorial Fund has been established.
