Mrs. Elmer (Monica A.) Vorwald, 95, of Luther Manor, formerly of 1060 Edina, died at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born on May 3, 1908, in Holy Cross, Iowa, daughter of Mathias and Helena (Duehr) Theisen. She married Elmer F. Vorwald on July 25, 1929, at Nativity Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 1997.

She was a full-time homemaker and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Monica was a member of Nativity Catholic Church and its Rosary Society and served as Rosary Society president.

Monica was a musician and accomplished pianist. She was a seamstress, excellent cook and a prolific letter writer to the day of her death.

Monica represented all that was good in the world, an enduring faith, love and compassion. She exemplified the Christian ideal of hospitality and welcomed everyone. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a daughter, Char M. (Edward) Hawks, of Bellevue, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Tim Hawks (Mary Lew McCormick), of Shorewood, Wis., Teri (John) Goodmann, of Dubuque, Katie (Tony) Topf, of Wonderlake, Ill., Lori Hawks, of Iowa City, Sue (Dan) Goodmann, of Sugar Grove, Ill., Carolyn (John) Grabow, of Davenport, Iowa, and Lisa Hawks, of Big Bear, Calif.; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Clem "Toots" Haas, of Monticello, Iowa; and many greatly loved nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Marge (Harland) Byrne and Del (Earl) VanVleck; two brothers, Alphonse (Vera) Theisen and Matt (Peggy) Theisen; two half-sisters, Mary Duehr and Catherine Seyfert; and two half-brothers, John and Joseph Theisen.

Memorials may be given to Nativity Parish, 1225 Alta Vista, Dubuque, Iowa 52001, and to Luther Manor, 3131 Hillcrest Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52001.
