Penny I. Small, 61, of 830 Hawkeye Drive, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Hospice Care Incorporated, Madison, Wis., after losing a short-term battle with metastatic melanoma.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

She was born on April 11, 1942, in Moline, Ill., daughter of Robert and Irene (Willmeroth) Knapp, and raised by Robert and Isabelle (Rohner) Knapp. She married John Joseph Small on Nov. 22, 1962, at St. Joseph's Church, Dubuque.

She was raised in Dubuque and graduated from the former Visitation Academy in 1960. She graduated from the Dubuque Beauty Academy in 1961.

She worked at the Diamond Jo most recently and at Family Mart, Casino Belle, Hy-Vee, Donut Boy and the Book Nook in the past. She enjoyed cards, crafts, traveling, feeding birds and ceramics but her skill was clearly present in her cake decorating.

She loved people and had never met a stranger. Her family was her true love with her grandchildren always bringing a bright and beautiful smile to her face.

Surviving are her parents, Robert and Isabelle Knapp; her mother, Irene Willmeroth; her husband, John Small, of Dubuque; seven children, Raymond J. (Julie A.) Small, of Iowa City, Stephanie A. (Gary E.) Scheffert, of Dubuque, Christopher S. (Rebecca J.) Small, of Rockvale, Tenn., and Stacie L. (Richard J.) Herring, Shawn W. (girlfriend, Kathy L. Beau), Sgt. Eric D. (Sandy J.) Small and Shannon L. (boyfriend, Mark R. Scholtes) Small, all of Dubuque; 19 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Charles E. (Judy) Knapp, of Fort Smith, Ark., and David R. (Debbie) Knapp, of Lee Summit, Mo.; a sister, Pamela (Gary) Cant, of Moline, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Scott John Small.

In lieu of flowers, a Penny I. Small Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Hospice Care Incorporated in Madison, and the doctors and nurses at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics.
