Mrs. W.L. "Roy" (Kathleen W.) Schmeichel, 82, of 1910 Carter Road, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Ennoble Manor Care Center, Dubuque.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. There will be no visitation. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on May 24, 1921, in Elkader, Iowa, daughter of Clarence F. and Louise (Kleinpell) Murphy. She graduated from Elkader High School and the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

She married Bruce Irwin on Jan. 17, 1944; he died on March 17, 1944. She later married W.L. "Roy" Schmeichel on Nov. 28, 1946, in Madison, Wis.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and a board member of Area Residential Care and Dubuque County Association of Retarded Citizens. She also was a member of the Foster Grandparent Advisory Council and the Kids on the Block Program.

She received the Governor's Service Award for tutoring students in English as a second language.

Surviving are her husband, W.L. "Roy" Schmeichel, of Dubuque; three daughters, Gretchen Schmeichel, of Dubuque, Mary Schmeichel, of North Liberty, Iowa, and Sarah Schmeichel, of Chicago; two sons, John (Susan) Schmeichel, of Bethel Park, Penn., and Thomas (Diane) Schmeichel, of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Laura, Daniel, James, T.J., Charles and Kenneth; three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Garrett and Jack; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Lorna Tinsley and Barbara Moline.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Area Residential Care, Hospice of Dubuque or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque, Barb K. and Cathy, and the staff at Ennoble Manor for the excellent care given to Kathleen.
