CASCADE, Iowa - Evelyn K. Bertling, 72, of 710 Second Ave. NW, Cascade, died at 11:40 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with the Very Rev. James Miller officiating and the Rev. Daniel Krapfl concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Bertling owned and operated Grandma's Kitchen in Cascade from 1988 until her retirement in 2000.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1931, in Cascade, daughter of Harry and Anna (Anen) Miller. She received her education at the former St. Mary's School in Cascade.

She married John W. "Bill" Bertling on Nov. 28, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade; he preceded her in death on April 2, 1987. She later married Robert Honzel on May 22, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade.

She was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade. She enjoyed crocheting, working on her many craft projects and playing cards with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Robert F. Honzel, of Cascade; nine daughters, Jane (Walter) Puccio, of Farley, Sandy (Mike) Coohey, of Dubuque, Susan (Mark) Hostert, of Bernard, Sherry (Tom) Simon, of Cascade, Peggy Bertling, of Phoenix, Ariz., Billie Sue (David) Hummel, of Cascade, Vicki (Bill) Takes, of Monticello, Kris (Mark) Bideaux, of Marion, and Kari (David) Stecher, of Des Moines; three sons, Jim (Deb) Bertling, Jeff Bertling and Mike Bertling (and friend, Sharon Woller), all of Cascade; stepchildren, Judy (Jim) Jamison, of Bettendorf, Tim (Ann) Honzel, of Evanston, Ill., and Laura (Jeff) Baldwin, of Greenfield, Wis.; 23 grandchildren, Jasper (Deanna) Puccio, Cathie (David) Tielbar, Matt Puccio (and fiancee, Cindi Way), Marco Puccio, Jeffrey Puccio, Dana (Dave) Simon, Theresa (Frank) Scherrman, Tammy Hillebrand, Dawn Simon, Jason Simon (and fiancee, Kelly Gehl), Eric Garves, Angela Garves, Roamn Hummel (and fiancee, Brooke Featherston), Cora Hummel, Nelly Hummel, Cody Takes, Kayla Takes, Logan Bertling, Luke Bertling, Dane Bertling, Abby Ries, Dan Ries and William Stecher; seven stepgrandchildren, Kristen and Becky Schuster, Henry and Max Honzel and Erika, Jared and Ross Baldwin; nine great-grandchildren, Haley and Noah Puccio, Nick and Alex Tielbar, Dilan, Carter and Tanner Simon and Jared and Justin Scherrman; and two sisters, Clara Strang and Leona Manternach, both of Cascade.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Donald Hillebrand, on March 15, 1978; two sisters, Rosie Manternach and Sally Miller; and two brothers, Ray Miller and Leo Miller.

An Evelyn K. Bertling Memorial Fund has been established.
