ST. DONATUS, Iowa - Florian J. Herrig, 83, of 213 W. 1st St., St. Donatus, died at 12:25 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at Bethany Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Donatus Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 273, of Bellevue. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7:45 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Mr. Herrig worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in July 1982.

He was born on June 1, 1919, in St. Donatus, son of Henry and Mary (Gehler) Herrig. He was born in St. Donatus and was raised in La Motte.

He was a veteran with the Navy submarine fleet, having served in the South Pacific during World War II.

He married Charlene Curtis on May 5, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, North Garryowen. They then moved back to St. Donatus.

He was a member of St. Donatus Parish and its Holy Name and Rosary Society. He also belonged to the American Legion Post 273, of Bellevue.

Gardening and working around the house were Florian's favorite pastimes. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events.

Surviving are his wife, Charlene, of Dubuque; a daughter, Ann (Garrett) Hart, of Leesburg, Va.; five sons, Tom Herrig and Rick (Kim) Herrig, both of Dubuque, Dennis (Judy) Herrig, of Tulsa, Okla., Kevin (Joann) Herrig, of St. Catherine, and Todd Herrig, of Tempe, Ariz.; three sisters, Norma Michel, Saverna (Burt) Stoltz and Rhinelda Brune, all of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Amy and Scott Herrig, Chad (Kelly) Herrig, Jayden and Abbey Herrig, Aubrey Herrig and Ashley, Garrett Jr. and Luke Hart; two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Lucas Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Sylvan; and three sisters at birth.

A Florian J. Herrig Memorial Fund has been established.

The Herrig family wishes to thank the staffs at Mercy Medical Center, The Finley Hospital and Bethany Home for the excellent care given to Florian.
