Saul Greenstein, 82, of Sonoma, Calif., formerly of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2003, following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma cancer.

Private family services were held. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Sonoma.

He was born on May 7, 1920, in Philadelphia. An electrical engineering graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he maintained throughout his life an avid fascination for new technology and construction.

He relocated to Dubuque, where he founded a successful shipping and distribution business on the Mississippi River known as Inland Molasses Co.

While in Dubuque, he met Patsy Gordon, who was to be his companion and wife for 47 remarkably happy years.

In 1973, having successfully built up his business and looking for new challenges, he sold his business and moved with his family to San Francisco. Soon, he was again at work developing several innovative manufacturing facilities on his own design, always taking uncommon pride and delight in mastering the intricacies of every aspect of construction and production.

He was an active member of Temple Emanuel in San Francisco for 30 years, and more recently Temple Shir Shalom in Sonoma.

He was active in many non-profit organizations. He was past president of the Boys Club of Dubuque and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra.

He was noted for his dry wit and his honest and direct outlook on life.

In addition to his wife, Patsy, he is survived by two sons, Jon and Michael, of San Francisco. He also is fondly remembered by his older brother, Harry; and many nieces and nephews.
